Um…nah.
Man, I found Otis Redding in my early teens, searched high and low for all his tapes (cassette era for me), and loved him so much I remember doing a painting of his name when I was in the crisis unit to soothe myself. Guess I’m not ready for this sampling of one of his great songs. My first thought was of how draggy-ass slow it is. My next thought was STOP YAMMERING OVER THIS GREAT SONG cuz I CAN’T HEAR IT.
Next thought was “Wut?? You’re talking about how RICH you are, and how women are SELLING OUT, and all of that over this heartfelt ode to treating a woman right?”
Next thought was “I like the bit they used as a sample, tho.”
So overall first impression is I hate it.
100% with Nezua on this one. All I could think when I first heard it was, “why did they have to go and ruin a perfect song?” Not feeling this at all.
I actually really like this track. The use of the sample is perfect. Maybe the best use of a vocalization sample since Talib Kweli’s “Get By”. Sure the subject matter is a little cliche, but I like to think that the bragging about their wealth is at least a little tongue-in-cheek, especially Yeezy’s second verse.
As for the rest, the “ruining” of a “heartfelt ode to treating women right”, nah. I may be missing something, but I’m pretty sure they never mention women “selling out” so I’m not sure where that came from. But “Try a Little Tenderness” is far from perfect. Like many of Redding’s songs, the theme is very misogynist (see also: “Respect”). It paints a picture of women, or rather “girls”, as frail creatures who need to be nurtured and held to make everything right. “All you got to do” to treat a woman right is not “hold her”, you actually have to be aware of who she is as a person and attend to her needs accordingly. Sometimes she probably doesn’t want to be held.
Anyway, I’m not saying “Try a Little Tenderness” isn’t a great song, just thought I’d get that out there.
